Organic Electric is an exploration into the possibilities of 3-dimensional electro-luminescent LED structures. There are myriad possibilites for LEDs as a physical media, going far beyond their traditional use in Times Square type, 2-dimensional information displays. The concept of LED Weaving, is new and uncharted territory. Expanding on the custom switches that are the basic unit of "Firefly", Organic Electric seeks to create organically shaped, responsive LED forms, rooted in analog and digital building techniques.

Manta Ray is the third large-scale LED mesh piece in the Organic Electric series. It features 1600 bright white LEDs soldered together into a formable mesh. The piece hangs from a central wire and plugs into an external power supply. Because of the efficiency of LEDs, at maximum brightness, the piece consumes only 96 watts of electricity, .

The mesh is at once rigid and flexible. At this size, the mesh starts to exhibit wave-like movement when in motion. In other words, it flops.

"LED Basket" is a single rectangular sheet of 800 hand-soldered bright white LEDs folded into an upside-down basket shape. The 20x40 LED sheet is first folded into a long tube and attached only in the middle. In its final form, it is folded back over itself to create the piece's inside-out basket shape.

The piece's inside-out form and various junctions create a durable and elastic structure. It can be hung as displayed in the top image, or also flipped upside-down (above), depending on its height in relation to the viewer's eye. It hangs from a clear plastic chord with 2 small clips, or can also be displayed on top of a piece of furniture.

Organic Electric is a project based around the construction of custom designed, hand-soldered LED mesh. Soldering together hundreds of bright white LEDs, Jason Krugman Studio has begun experimenting with the possibilities of the LED as a stand-alone medium for sculpture. The LED's two legs are bent and soldered together in a uniform pattern, with close attention being paid to the polarity of the diode. The resulting mesh can be shaped into brilliantly glowing organic forms.

The mesh is at once rigid and flexible, and can be reshaped many times without breakage. When bent into various geometric forms, the mesh is strong enough to hold up its own weight, and can be formed into columns or semi-circular forms that stand upright without additional support.
