HARMONIUM
The Harmonium Series takes advantage of the lightweight and flexible characteristics of the original Organic Electric LED Mesh. In this first iteration of moving LED mesh pieces, a small motor pushes and pulls a piece of illuminated LED mesh back and forth away from a surface. The LEDs undulate and the piece of mesh seems to form a sentient, breathing organism. The series is titled after a creature invented by Kurt Vonnegut in his 1959 novel, Sirens of Titan. Originally designed and prototyped November 2010, a larger and more versatile system is currently being designed.
Organic Electric mesh is made from thousands of LEDs, soldered together into a light-weight, transparent mesh. In the video above, Krugman is shown manipulating one of the first prototypes. The mesh can be formed, much like chicken wire, to create 3-dimensional illuminated forms. In the 2 clips below, a different type of LED mesh is shown responding to touch and to signals from an Arduino micro-controller.
